FAQ

When was BID founded?
1996, In 1998 we received our 501(c)3 Tax Exempt Status

Is Kwame Alexander still involved with BID?
Kwame is the guiding visionary force behind BID, and not only manages the day-to-day operations, but still finds time to serve as a BID coach.

Is the program a one-day program?
It can be. BID offers two full-day intensive workshops for students. The first day is devoted to writing, and the second concentrates on publishing. Sometimes, schools that already have a strong poetry/creative writing lesson/program, will only bring the BID publishing workshop for their students.

How Much Does it Cost to Bring BID to My Students
The cost varies, depending on number of days and other logistics. With that said, we have never turned down a school. Contact our President, Kwame Alexander, for more information: 703-371-4325 or kwame@bookinaday.org

Who does the BID serve?
BID primarily serves high school/secondary students, but we are piloting the program in elementary and middle schools in 2009.

How Many Schools Have Completed the Program
13 Schools have completed the program. We have created more than 300 student authors in Michigan, New York, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.

What is the Mission Statement?
Book-in-a-Day's mission is to use poetry and an innovative student-run book publication program to foster engaged reading and writing skills that inspire a sense of authorship/ownership in young adults, which has proven to lead to greater academic confidence and achievement. Through curriculum and coaching, BID will develop the literacy capacity of schools, libraries, and other organizations, and lead the effort to encourage students to appreciate the power of language and literature.

What makes the BID Program unique?
Two things: Students learn how to publish their own quality book. And, they do it in ONE DAY!

Where do the proceeds of the books go?
Proceeds go to the school, for disbursement as the school sees fit. Some schools put the money towards a school project (senior cruise); some schools put it towards the PTA; others put the money into an endowment to bring BID to underserved and underfunded communities so that all students have the opportunity to Do The Write Thing!

Does BID have other programs?
We are currently piloting an elementary and middle school book-in-a-day program. If it works well, which we believe it will, we will offer this program beginning in 2010.

Is BID a non-profit?
Book-in-a-Day, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization incorporated in the state of Virginia and is governed by an independent board of directors to which it is accountable..

How is BID supported financially?
As a non-profit organization, BID relies on a variety of funding sources, including the support of schools, school districts, community organizations, local government, foundations, corporations, generous donors and revenue generated from the schools and organizations who contract our services. Currently, BID is seeking financial partners, including individuals, corporations and foundations throughout North America to support our programs.

Why should I contribute to the BID?
Friends and supporters of BID share a common mission: improve literacy for young adults by inducting them into the "writerly" life so that they can become more engaged readers and writers. Your support and our programs will ensure that we meet our current and future needs as means to accomplish this mission.
